I have not experimented with the exact character length, but if I edit the metadata in a PDF and make the title too long, the file will not import into Bookshelves. It says it's importing, but the book never shows up.

Thanks for reporting this. Since we build the filename out of Title + Author it can happen we reach the 255 char filename limit. Fix will be in release 1.0.15.
This fix shipped in the 1.0.25 release. Filenames are now automatically capped to the APFS 255-byte limit, so long titles import correctly. Thanks for reporting it!
